Wales based Ceramicist, Chloe (b.1974) graduated from Cardiff School of Art and Design in 2024 with an MA Ceramics, Distinction.
After graduation, she was shortlisted for the Guildford House Open Art Prize, was selected as a Graduate Member of Design Nation
Prior to her sculptural vessels becoming her main practice, Chloe made wheel-thrown tableware for private clients and restaurants.
I specialise in hand-thrown pieces, with a focus on the vessel form, texture and surface decoration. I explore the beauty in both the process of creation and the finished piece, where the quiet labour and unique character of the materials are evident in every object, with details that emerge and shift with changing light. By stripping away domestic function, distorting the form, and focussing on surface and texture, I love to create pieces that evoke a sense of stillness, much like a still life painting.
My vessels are made using stoneware clay, that start off on the potter’s wheel, and are then altered, to create new ‘flattened’ forms and compositions. The transformation continues through mark-making, using a variety of techniques to create texture, followed by the application of slips in a painterly manner, to infuse each piece with a natural and serene quality. The result is a finish that evokes the essence of the natural world. Some of the pieces are burnished and polished to achieve a particular sheen; and works are left unglazed to preserve the integrity and tactility of the material.
Chloe works from her studio in Abergavenny, South Wales and has shown work in selected galleries in the UK.
