Chris (b. 1970) graduated in 1992 with BA (Hons) in Wood, Metal, Ceramics and Plastic from the now, University of Brighton.
He has been working with clay for over thirty years, with his most recent work turning inward, exploring a more personal history that draws from his childhood and teenage years. He is currently researching the queer figures and artists, such as Derek Jarman and Walt Whitman, who shaped his identity whilst navigating his own sense of self.
I predominantly work with stoneware clays, using oxides, slips, watercolours and wax to create richly textured surfaces. I hand build traditional forms associated with the heritage of ceramics including moon jars and bottle forms in order to tell contemporary stories that deal with the conflicts of adversity and beauty.
I uses a variety of traditional hand building techniques, hand painting, mono printing, transfer printing and sgraffito with underglazes and hand blended coloured slips, sanding and distressing surfaces to create layers of colour and interest.
Chris works from Baltic Clay Studio in Liverpool, a ceramics studio he founded in 2014. He has exhibited his work in group exhibitions in London and overseas, and in 2018 was awarded a Selected Membership of the Craft Potters Association.
In 2025, he was selected to show an installation of new ceramic “portraits” for Collect Open at Somerset House, London and Poppy for Derek was acquired by National Museums Liverpool for their permanent collection.
