Frances,(b. 1976), is a contemporary artist working from her studio near Tunbridge Wells, East Sussex. She graduated in 2000 with a BA (Hons) Degree (1st Class) in Fine Art from the University of the West of England, Bristol.
She worked for several years as a designer for the BBC in Bristol and London before going back to her true passion, painting, full time.
Frances works predominantly in oil paints. Guided by an appreciation for storytelling, narratives serve at the heart of her work and she seeks to fill her paintings with ideas and conceptual depth.
‘At present, my creative explorations revolve around the interplay between figures and interior spaces, offering viewers a window into our intimate emotions that are entangled with the spaces that we occupy.
With my work, I find that the ordinary can become fascinating by simply changing the perspective. I use aerial perspectives to craft patterns seen from above that compress and flatten the spatial dimensions. These pieces venture beyond the constraints of conventional perception and seek to challenge our normal sense of space.
At heart, I’m a committed oil painter and I enjoy exploring the physicality of paint; the textures, the brushmarks and the depth. This is especially evident in my gestural figurative paintings, painted from life. Often in these works, I will work in a limited colour palette to help convey the story I want to tell.
My inspiration comes from artists such as Frank Auberbach, De Kooning, Velazquez and Lucien Freud’.
Working from her home studio in the South of England, Frances exhibits across the UK, and from 2025, in New York.
Frances has a growing number of collectors of her work worldwide.
