Colour has become the driving force behind my paintings. Every painting has a new palette – I perceive the world through colour.
More recently my work has been affected by the challenges and experiences of becoming a new mother. it has become more empowered and confident, the personal questions that arise from motherhood having a profound effect on me. Gestural and emotive marks come together. A battle between surface, paint and my eye, creating an unexpected balance in composition. A visceral reaction to colour.
I don’t like to plan the destination of a painting as it would impair the outcome. Each painting has its own journey. The excitement for me is in the journey, exploring colour, scale and personal emotion. An escape from the everyday.
WORK FOR 10 YEARS ON (OCT/NOV 2026):
A softer kind of release runs through these works for Silson’s Show. There is a sense of loosening, of allowing things to settle and unfold without resistance.
Nature is not depicted directly but is felt in the language of the paintings. In the suddenness of a mark, the movement of something caught in a breeze, the quiet trace of rain after long sunshine. Fleeting sensations and half-remembered moments surface intuitively, becoming colour, gesture and atmosphere.
The works carry the last warmth of summer without attempting to describe it. Light begins to soften, the air shifts; it becomes slightly cooler, a new scent emerges, a familiar chill settles in, and something imperceptible changes.
A quiet surrender to the natural rhythm of things.

Bethany works from her studio in rural Essex and has gallery representation throughout the UK with work in many private collections worldwide. In 2026 she was delighted to receive a commission to create all the artwork for Miiro Hotels, Templeton Gardens, London.
