Born in Brighton in 1975, Dominic studied B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art at Liverpool School of Art and has been working professionally as an artist since 2001.
A major opportunity came from Dominic’s earlier training as a woodcut artist under Britain’s leading expert and current President of the RA, Rebecca Salter. This gained him a position with Exeter University working on an Arts and Humanities research council project combining ancient Japanese woodcut styles with ancient French literature. Professor Hugh Roberts provided obscure quotes from his own research and Dominic translated them into strange and fun woodcuts, often with pop up or revealing parts.
His models have always been his family. Early on, this was when the children were young and the house was cold, steam rose from the bath producing the atmosphere and intimacy of old masters (who probably drew their own wives and children).
When Dominic’s partner was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis the commercial art world had to be put on hold. The time spent helping his partner in and out of the bath became a time he could also use to draw with ink on wet paper – always late into the night.
Dominic draws into canvases in oil with the same spontaneity as he works with ink on wet paper. Drawing is continuous, one work creating the next.
The paintings at Silson are part of his late night painting sessions and Dominic is pleased that the setting of Silson Contemporary will reflect the intimate nature of these new oil paintings.
Dominic works from his studio in Devon. From 2006 Dominic’s paintings began to gain popularity, having sell out Solo shows in London and Bath. As well as showing in Europe and America at Art fairs. He is widely collected and has worked on educational collaborations with Exeter University where he has work on permanent display. He always felt his paintings were simply for himself, but found mutual connection with his collectors.
