Eleanor, (b. 1978), is a Scottish artist based in Dunbar, working across painting, print, collage, and cold wax. She graduated with an MA in Fine Art from Falmouth University in 2025, following earlier studies in Textiles at Heriot-Watt University.
Her work explores the interplay between memory, light, and landscape through layered, atmospheric compositions. Combining paint with translucent Japanese and Chinese papers and hand-ground pigments sourced from the local coastline, Eleanor creates surfaces that shift subtly with light and perspective.
Rooted in walking and observation, her practice reflects a sustained engagement with place. The resulting works are both delicate and resolved, capturing the transient qualities of experience while maintaining a strong sense of material presence.
My work is driven by an interest in how light and memory shape our experience of landscape.
I build surfaces through layering, using translucent papers to create depth, softness, and subtle shifts in tone. These layers allow forms to emerge and recede, holding a tension between abstraction and recognition.
Walking is central to my process, grounding the work in lived experience rather than direct representation. What remains are distilled impressions — fragments of atmosphere, light, and place.
I am interested in how these elements settle over time, forming quiet, contemplative spaces that invite reflection and a sense of connection.
Eleanor works from her studio in Dunbar, and since graduating in 2025 has had a solo exhibition with The Dundas Street Gallery, Edinburgh. She was also selected and exhibited in the 145th Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour Open Exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy in the same year.
In 2026, she has been selected to exhibit in several Visual Arts Scotland exhibitions.
