Samantha (b. 1974) is a London-born textile artist with a background and career in fashion knitwear. She studied Knitwear and Technology at the University of the Arts, London, graduating in 1996.
After relocating from London to the South coast in 2017, she has set up her work place at her unique Art Deco home which she uses as a base for her textile practice, location work and creative workshops.
Samantha developed her woven panels after an experiment in product design, creating and making a pair of hand woven mirror frames using an off loom woven technique.
“I create each piece through a slow and meticulous process of wrapping, weaving and layering fine cotton thread onto hardwood panels.
My work is influenced by the 70s craft movement and the relationship between traditional hand crafts and art and how they cross over. I am inspired by the work of textile artists such as Patrice Allart and Pauline Caulfield, constructing graphic and abstract compositions that are softened when translated into textiles.
I begin each panel with a considered colour palette and a fluid plan but the nature of the process allows for adaptations and changes as I expose and reveal each section. It is a very mindful and physical process and the potential to develop every piece as its worked, is exciting. “
Samantha works her studio on the South coast in Kent. Her work is a product of her immediate environment. Having taken on an iconic Art Deco house as a restoration project and subsequently winning an award for interior design, her practice has evolved as part of this transformation.
Samantha has collectors of her work around the UK and works on commission for private clients and commercial interiors and projects.
